La Argentina, Brasil, China, India y Sudáfrica lideraron en 2011 el crecimiento de los cultivos transgénicos, superando en más del doble el incremento registrado en los países desarrollados. Así lo destacó un informe elaborado por el Servicio Internacional para la Adquisición de Aplicaciones Agrobiotecnológicas, que precisó que la tasa de crecimiento de los cultivos genéticamente modificados en los países en desarrollo en 2011 fue de 11 por ciento, equivalente a 8,2 millones de hectáreas. El mismo análisis remarcó que Argentina continúa siendo uno de los principales productores de cultivos transgénicos, con 23,7 millones de hectáreas en 2011, lo que representa 14,8 por ciento del área global cultivada con transgénicos y un aumento de 3,5 por ciento con respecto al año anterior.
